Research

In the beginning of this project, we weren't sure what to make with the knitting machine yet. Our first step was to research what's possible to do with a knitting machine and get inspiration.

One project that was especially interesting was neuroknitting. In this project, live data is being collected from brainwaves and directly converted into patterns for the knitting machine to knit scarves.

This originally inspired us to make something using live data as well,, something about the fast fashion industry and its impact in the environment. But we quickly realized that there were two problems, first, there isn't a lot of live data for the fashion industry and second, our knitting machine isn't able to process live data.

Another idea we had was to knit QR codes that link to a website or video with information about unethical practices in the fashion industry.

One more idea was to make an art installation at an outdoor exhibition in Augsburg. For that we wanted to include data, like how many cubic meters of water does it take to produce one pair of jeans, and then knit a bunch of squares with different patterns representing water. These squares would have been hung up to build a room the size of these cubic meters that you can walk into and experience the amount of water.

The problem with all of these ideas was the same: It was all focused on showing the negative parts of the fast fashion industry but not presenting a solution.

This is why we decided to not just draw attention to the negatives but also do better and make something sustainable you can actually wear.
